Why do many closeted gay guys try to act overtly macho?

You know the type: they make phobic comments, brag about sleeping with multiple women, and overall try to act as macho as possible. I get that they're trying to hide their true uality, but don't they realize they're little charade is actually doing the exact opposite of what they think it's doing? I mean, guys that try too hard are a huge red flag.
